AMES, Iowa - Iowa State director of track and field and cross country Martin Smith has announced the program's 2019 indoor and outdoor track and field schedules. ISU will be hosting one indoor meet in 2019: the Iowa State Classic.
The indoor season starts in 2018, and with the first of three meets in Iowa City with the inaugural Jimmy Grant Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 8.
A familiar run of competitions follow there, as ISU returns to the Hawkeye Invitational (Jan. 12) and Larry Wieczorek Invite (Jan. 18-19) for the third-straight seasons in Iowa City. ISU will return to the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas on Jan. 25-26 for the second-straight season. The Cyclones will then take on its usual first weekend of February trip to the Husker Invitational.
Feb. 8-9 marks the prestigious Iowa State Classic. One of the best indoor events in the country, ISU will welcome some of the best teams and student-athletes in the country to the Lied Recreation Athletic Center for two days of competition.
Following competition at the JDL DMR Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the Cyclones will travel to Lubbock for the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 22-23. The NCAA Indoor Championships return to Birmingham, Alabama on Mar. 8-9.
The outdoor season is slated to begin on the last weekend of March with the Stanford Invitational on Mar. 29-30, followed by the Sun Angel Classic on Apr. 5-6 at Arizona State. The always busy third weekend of April will see ISU at a trio of meets: the Mt. SAC Relays and Bryan Clay Invitational in the Los Angeles area, and the Cardinal Classic at Stanford.
After the Drake Relays on Apr. 25-27, ISU will head to Norman for the 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The postseason road begins on May 23-25 with the NCAA West Preliminaries in Sacramento, California for the second-straight season. With Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon undergoing extensive renovations in preparation of hosting the 2021 IAAF World Championships, Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas has stepped in to host the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships from June 5-8.
Another event local track and field fans can look forward to is the return of the USATF Outdoor Championships to Drake Stadium in Des Moines on July 25-28. The later date is to accommodate the later date for the 2019 IAAF World Championships, which will be Sept. 28-Oct 6, 2019 in Doha, Qatar.
