Cancini, Timakova To Finals; ISU 6-1 In Doubles Action Saturday

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Maty Cancini and Margarita Timakova will represent Iowa State in the finals of their respective brackets at the Gopher Invitational after wins Saturday afternoon at the Baseline Tennis Center.
Cancini was impressive in a 6-2, 6-3 win against Nebraska's Vasanti Shinde in Flight A. Cancini will face Minnesota's Tina Kreinis Sunday in the finals.
Timakova earned a 6-2, 6-4 win against Minnesota's Isabella Lambert to advance to tomorrow's final against another Golden Gopher in Kalyssa Hall.
Savannah Williams beat UNI's Morganne Borsch, 6-1, 6-1, to improve to 2-0 in singles action this weekend. Karen Alvarez moved to 1-1 in her flight with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (5) win against Northern Iowa's Olivia Fain.
The Cyclones went 6-1 in doubles action in the morning. Cancini teamed with Annabella Bonadonna to win their bracket, which included a 6-3 victory in the finals against Nebraska's Marina Cozac and Elizabeth Gould.
Savannah Williams and Margarita Timakova also went 2-0 in doubles action, beating the UNI pair of Claudia Toledo and Daisy Phillips in the finals, 6-4. Meanwhile, in Flight 5, Karen Alvarez and Caroline Gibbens played just one match, defeating the Minnesota tandem of Camila Vargaas and Bella Lambert, 7-5.
