AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State soccer team (2-4-1) kicked-off the 2018-19 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series with a 2-1 victory over previously-unbeaten Iowa (4-1-1) on Friday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones notched their first win on the pitch in the series since 2014 to clinch two points in the first event of academic year.
Iowa State flew out of the gates with first-half goals from Kasey Opfer (7') and Taylor Bee (35'), and fended off a second-half Hawkeye flurry for victory.
Turning Point of the Game
With Iowa State holding a 1-0 advantage, the Cyclones set up for a free kick in front of their own bench after an Iowa foul. Junior Hannah Cade played an absolutely brilliant ball in toward the far post and Bee, a freshman, soared to win the header. Bee drove the ball back across goal and buried it in the back of the net for the first of goal of her career. The Cyclones proved once again to be dangerous off set pieces, and their second of the night was enough to lift them past a comeback-minded Iowa team.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Kasey Opfer. There were many options to choose from on a great night to be a Cyclone, including four field players (Cade, Jordan Enga, Marin Daniel and McKenna Schultz) that played the full 90 minutes. However, it was Opfer's header in the seventh minute that truly set the tone for the rivalry match. The junior, who was become known for her ability to win headers off of set pieces struck again on Friday night, putting home a corner kick from Emily Steil to give ISU an early 1-0 lead.
Coach Speak
"We came out strong and got two goals on set pieces, which is a strength for us," head coach Tony Minatta said. "Kasey (Opfer) is real dangerous on the set pieces, and we put corners in very well. Hannah (Cade) put the free kick right on the money and then Taylor (Bee) got her first goal of the season. There were moments where Iowa had the better of it, but we stayed strong defensively and kept our heads about us. Credit them, they never quit and they're well-coached. We have to continue to get better and grow from this."
