AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (3-9, 0-3 Big 12) fell 2-1 to TCU (8-4-1, 2-1-1 Big 12) on Sunday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Courtney Powell's second goal of the season gave the Cyclones the lead in the 54th minute, but TCU responded with two scores by Gracie Brian (62', 74') to sneak past Iowa State.
Freshman goalkeeper Georgia Wimmer also made six saves for the Cyclones in the first start of her collegiate career.
Turning Point of the Game
The Cyclones found themselves with a 1-0 advantage midway through the second half after Powell's goal, but the Horned Frogs were relentless in their pursuit of an equalizer. They got it in the 62nd minute, when Tara Smith played a beautiful ball in front of goal from right of the 18-yard box. Brian won the header and redirected the ball to the far post for the game-tying goal.
Brian provided TCU its game-winner as well, connecting on a shot in the 74th minute to help the Horned Frogs secure their second conference win of the season.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes To…
Courtney Powell. The junior midfielder scored her second goal of the 2019 campaign to give Iowa State the lead in the 54th minute. Freshman Claudia Najera tracked down a ball at the end line out wide to the left, and played iy into the middle of the box. Powell made the connection and buried the chance in the back of the net with her left foot to give ISU a 1-0 advantage. The assist was Najera's team-leading third of the season.
Coach Speak
"Georgia Wimmer definitely kept us in the game that first half," said head coach Tony Minatta. "She acquitted herself very well in her first start. I thought she played really well. Second half we came out and played a lot harder, fought and were forcing them to defend. After we scored, a momentum shift happened and they came at us and we just couldn't really recover. There were some really good opportunities for us later in the half, but at the end of the day they were more clinical in front of goal than we were."
