CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The No. 11 Iowa State wrestling team is gearing up for a dual against Chattanooga on Saturday evening, but sent a troupe of 23 wrestlers to the UNI Open this morning. In total, 15 of Iowa State's wrestlers at the UNI Open finished in the top-six at their respective weights.
The Cyclones received championship performances from Logan Schumacher (165), Julien Broderson (184) and Joel Shapiro (197).
At 165 pounds, Schumacher went 3-0 on the day. He began the tournament with an 8-1 victory over Martell Boone. In the semifinals, he squared off with teammate Zane Mulder, edging Mulder by 4-2 decision in sudden victory. In the finals, Schumacher made light work of UNI's Pat Schoenfelder, defeating the Panther by 11-0 decision.
Broderson pushed his pin total on the year up to 11 on the year with two falls at the UNI Open. After receiving a bye to the semifinals, Broderson pinned Missouri's Cordel Duhart in the first period, bringing Duhart's shoulders to the mat in 2:18. He claimed the title with a 0:15 pin over teammate Tyler Buesgens.
Shapiro tallied a 3-0 mark to earn the 197-pound UNI Open crown. He took out Indiana's Jake Kleimola by 10-7 decision and followed that up by defeating Kleimola's teammate, Nick Willham, by 5-2 decision. In the finals, Shapiro shut out UNI's Tyrell Gordon, winning the match by 4-0 decision.
