SACRAMENTO, California – It was a big day for the Iowa State track and field team on Friday at the NCAA West Preliminaries, as the Cyclones advanced four more entries to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
ISU will be sending three entries to Austin in the 800-meter run, with Festus Lagat and Roshon Roomes each notching personal bests to advance in the men's division and Erinn Stenman-Fahey extending her Cyclone career by advancing on the women's side. In the men's 400-meter hurdles, Eric Fogltanz is advancing to the National Championships for the second-straight year in the 400-meter hurdles.
Lagat and Roomes were in the spotlight after being among the top qualifiers in the First Round yesterday. Lagat went first and controlled things for the first half, allowing him to bring home an auto-qualifying slot via a second-place finish in a personal best 1:46.58. Roomes followed that up with another wire-to-wire win in heat three, getting his auto-qualifying slot in a PR 1:46.88. The duo swapped spots on ISU's all-time top-10, with Lagat now No. 3 and Roomes No. 4.
Stenman-Fahey was in a battle the whole way, as a slow first 400 meant that the auto-qualifying slots would be needed to advance. She was in seventh after one lap, but worked her way up in the third 200 to get into a battle with Baylor's Leticia De Souza for the final spot. Stenman-Fahey got ahead on the front stretch and was able to hang on by 0.06 seconds to advance to Austin in 2:05.78, and extend her ISU career another competition.
Fogltanz also had a lot of work to do, as he also found himself seventh at one stage of his 400-meter hurdles competition. The strong finisher lived up to his reputation and was able to make some passes on the front stretch to get into that third and final qualifying slot and secure his trip to Austin. His time of 50.39 is a season-best.
In first round action, three of the four Cyclones entered in the sprint hurdles advanced to tomorrow's quarter final. On the men's side in the 110m hurdles, Mason Weh and Logan Schneider both advanced, with Weh clocking in at 13.92 and Schneider getting in at 14.04, 0.002 seconds away from being on the outside looking in. For the Cyclone women, Keira Christie-Galloway notched a 13.20 to advance to Saturday in the 100-meter hurdles. Despite not advancing, Kaylyn Hall did tie her personal best, notching a 13.65 in the First Round.
In the women's steeplechase, a pair of Cyclone women closed out their Iowa State track careers. Kelly Naumann, the school record holder in the event, finished 22nd in 10:12.36, while Abby Caldwell took 40th in 10:28.44.
