SACRAMENTO, California – The Iowa State track and field team secured three more bids to the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Saturday at the NCAA West Preliminaries. Hornet Stadium was good to the Cyclones again, as Edwin Kurgat (5,000m run) and the men's 4x400-meter relay secured trips to the National Championships for a second-straight year, while Keira Christie-Galloway punched her first career ticket to the NCAA Championships in the women's 100-meter hurdles.
Christie-Galloway, Kurgat and the men's 4x400m joins Iowa State's six qualifiers from the first two days of competition to advance to the 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 5-8 in Austin, Texas.
The first section of the men's 5,000 went out at a pedestrian pace, making getting into the top-5 a high priority. The field finally began to break up in the final mile, with both Cyclones able to hang onto that group. Kurgat was able to go with the speed in the section, and secured his trip to Austin with a third-place section finish in a time of 14:07.83. Big 12 5,000 champ Dan Curts saw his decorated Iowa State career come to an end, as he finished 10th in the section in 14:14.25.
This is the second-straight season Kurgat has advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 5K. He will look to improve on his seventh place finish in 2018 in two weeks' time.
The Cyclones lined up the same men's 4x400-meter relay team which brought home the Big 12 silver medal two weeks ago. The Cyclones were in a battle the whole way, as Charlie Johnson, Roshon Roomes, Ben Kelly and Eric Fogltanz came home fifth in their heat in 3:07.01, meaning they had to wait and see on the final heat and a timed qualification. ISU was able to secure the third and final time qualifying slot, booking their tickets to Austin again.
The Cyclones are headed to NCAAs in the 4x400 for the second-straight season, with Fogltanz and Roomes both returning in the event and adding to their individual event qualifications that were secured last night. Johnson and Kelly will make their NCAA Track and Field Championships debut in two weeks in Austin.
Christie-Galloway was able to improve on her 13.20 in the first round yesterday, clocking in at 13.18. However, a fourth-place finish in her heat meant she would have to wait to see if she would make it on time. There were no issues for the Canadian freshman, as her time held up as the fastest among non-auto qualifiers to secure her trip to Austin.
The women's 5,000-meter run saw Cailie Logue in a very fast section of the 5,000-meter run, as they fired off their race at a five-minute mile pace. The 2019 Big 12 Outdoor Performer of the Year was able to hang with the lead pack for most of the race, but faded in the final lap to finish 16th overall in 16:01.27.
In the men's 110-meter hurdles, Mason Weh and Logan Schneider saw their season come to an end, with Weh finishing 16th in 14.01 and Schneider taking 21st in 14.12. The duo both moved up into ISU's all-time top-five during the season, securing crucial points for the Cyclones in multiple events at the conference championships.
