FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Iowa State's Tripp Kinney wrapped up his sensational junior season by tying for 47th at the 2019 NCAA Men's Golf Championship at the Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Waukee, Iowa native carded a final-round 82 for a 72-hole 302 total. He was one of nine individuals to survive the 54-hole cut and compete on the final day of stroke play. The top eight teams advanced to the match play portion of the tournament beginning tomorrow.
Kinney's finish at the NCAA finals is one of the best by a Cyclone since the Regional format was implemented in 1989. All-American Nate McCoy tied for 29th at the 2012 NCAA Championship.
It was Kinney's school-record third-straight NCAA Championship appearance. It was his main goal at the beginning of the season to get this far, and Kinney cherished every moment on the course this week.
"This week was really special to come out here to play against the best players in the world," Kinney said. "To be able to make the fourth round cut and give myself an opportunity was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed this week and it was a blessing to play out here."
Wind gusts of 20-30 mph elevated scores today on the difficult track. Kinney went 59 holes before suffering his first double bogey of the tournament when he had a lost ball on hole No. 6. He got his first birdie of the day on 17.
Kinney ended the season by breaking the school's season scoring mark at 71.08, shaving nearly three strokes off his average from a year ago. The Ping All-Central Region selection also led the team in top-10 performances (6), sub-70 rounds (14) and was at par or below in 28 of 37 rounds this season.
