MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Iowa State tennis team dropped a tough 4-3 decision to Penn State Sunday afternoon in the season opener in Manhattan, Kansas.
Penn State took the doubles point behind wins at No. 1 and No. 2, but the Cyclones battled back with three singles win.
Maty Cancini rolled past Penn State's Frederikke Svarre to earn a 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 2 singles. At the top slot, freshman Thasaporn Naklo took a three-set victory over Gabby O'Gorman, winning 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.
Naklo's fellow freshman Ting-Pei Chang defeated PSU's Shannon Hanley, 6-3, 6-1.
Unfortunately for the Cyclones it wasn't enough as Penn State was able to secure three-set wins at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 singles to earn the victory.
The Cyclones return to action next weekend at Life Time Fitness in Urbandale. ISU hosts a Creighton (Noon) and South Dakota (5 p.m.) on Friday, followed by Northern Iowa (11 a.m.) and Omaha (3:30 p.m.) on Sunday.
