URBANDALE, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team defeated Creighton by a final score of 4-1 Friday morning during its home opener. This win brings Iowa State (1-1) up to .500 this spring after falling to Penn State last week.
Starting the day off right, Iowa State cruised to the doubles point, winning both of the completed matchups. Thasaporn Naklo paired with Christin Hsieh to take down Kate Krueger and Sarah Wilcox by a score of 6-1 in the top slot, while the No. 2 pairing of Maty Cancini and Ting-Pei Chang defeated Emma Gener and Gabby O'Connor, 6-3.
With Creighton's Erin Epperson being a late scratch in singles play, the Cyclones maintained their sharp start against a last-minute Bluejays lineup. Naklo easily defeated Sarah Wilcox in the highlight of the day, winning the first 10 games of the match and winning by a score of 6-0, 6-2.
Maty Cancini bested Creighton's Kate Krueger 6-2, 6-4 to gain the point for the No. 1 singles. To seal the win and gain the needed fourth point, Chie Kezuka defeated Julia King in two sets, winning 6-3, 6-1.
The Cyclones return to action in a couple hours, taking on South Dakota at 5 p.m. Following tonight, Iowa State will return to Life Time Fitness in Urbandale to face off against Northern Iowa (11 a.m.) and Omaha (3:30 p.m.) on Sunday.
