IOWA CITY, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team advanced three of four singles teams to the round of 32 and both doubles teams to the round of 16 at the ITA Central Regional Championships at the University of Iowa.
ISU got things rolling early with a pair of doubles wins that kept them alive heading into Saturday.
Thasaporn Naklo and Christin Hsieh defeated the Minnesota pairing of Lucy Lu and Anfisa Danilchenko in a thriller, 8-7 (4). Miska Kadleckova and Sofia Cabezas also did their part, quickly disposing of the Kansas duo of Julia Deming and Mariana Manyoma-Velasquez, 8-0.
Kadleckova and Cabezas will play Tulsa's Valeryia Rozenkova and Maria Berlanga Bandera on Saturday at 9 a.m. Naklo and Hsieh tangle with the Tulsa duo of Laia Conde Monfort and Shura Poppe, also at 9 a.m.
In singles action, Naklo, the top overall seed, made quick work of Tulsa's Ana Paula Naranjo Kobash, 6-0, 6-1. She advances to face Kansas' Tiffany Lagarde.
Chie Kezuka had a big day for the Cyclones, moving through the round of 128 with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Central Arkansas' Chunxi Xin. Kezuka followed that up with a win over Oklahoma's Emma Staker, rallying for the 6-7 (1), 6-1, 6-4 victory. Kezuka's round of 32 opponent will be KU's Sofia Smagina.
Kadleckova also advanced due to injury and meets Oklahoma's Marcelina Podlinska on Saturday.
