While many holes were left in the schedule during the pandemic-stricken 2020 outdoor season, none may have been more apparent than not running at the Drake Relays. The Cyclones are back this weekend with the majority of the squad making the trips to Drake Stadium across the weekend. The No. 14 men's team is the defending champion of the Relay Cup, claiming the 2019 crown via titles in the 4x800 and distance medley relays. The Cyclones will have a strong contingent ready to defend the crown, with the 4x800 team looking for its third-straight title and the Drake Relays record of 7:14.89 set by Nebraska in 1985.
The Iowa State women will also get their chances to showcase talents, with a few intriguing individual entries as well. All-American Cailie Logue will be ISU's final competitor on Friday night as part of a strong women's 1,500-meter field, while Abby Caldwell gets her next shot in the steeplechase on Thursday.
At Oregon, the Cyclones have already had one memorable trip to the new Hayward Field, and the same stars of the first trip will be back looking for more. The highlight of the Oregon Relays weekend comes Friday night at 11 p.m. Central in the men's 5,000-meter run when national champions Wesley Kiptoo and Edwin Kurgat run against Oregon national champions Cole Hocker and Cooper Teare. At the Hayward Premiere three weeks ago, Kiptoo and Kurgat ran to the nation's two fastest marks in the 10,000m run, with both going sub-28 in a race paced by Oregon's Teare.
Earlier Friday night at Hayward, David Too will get another run in the steeplechase Friday night at 9:25 p.m. Central. Too clocked a personal best 8:47.58 to finish second at the Hayward Premiere three weeks ago and currently ranks No. 13 nationally in the event.
