AMES, Iowa – It is another two-meet weekend for the Iowa State track and field program. Friday afternoon will see a group of men's and women's distance runners take the Blue Oval at Drake for the Jim Duncan Invitational. Meanwhile, a little further South, the No. 8 Iowa State men's middle distance crew heads to Ole Miss for the Joe Walker Invitational on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.
For the Jim Duncan Invitational in Des Moines, fan attendance is being allowed, but tickets must be purchased in advance, as tickets will not be sold on-site. Social distancing and mask wearing will be required at all times within the venue and seating areas.
As of now, neither meet will have a live stream available. Live results for competition at Drake can be found here, while timing and results at Ole Miss will be provided by Delta Timing, here.
A group of 14 student-athletes will be representing ISU at Drake Stadium on Friday afternoon, with competition beginning at 1:45 p.m. For the ISU women's distance crew, this will be their first appearance of the season after a delayed beginning due to the NCAA Cross Country season going beyond its usual boundaries.
An exception to that has been Abby Caldwell, as the Cyclone senior comes off her 10:19.34 in the steeplechase at Oregon last weekend to be entered in the 1,500m and 5,000m on Friday. All other members of the Cyclone women's distance group will be making outdoor season debuts. One of the highlights will be the women's 5,000m with a nearly full crew of Brenna Cohoon, Winrose Chesang, Grace Dickel, Dana Feyen and Janette Schraft joining Caldwell.
Meanwhile for the ISU men at Drake, Mitchell Day and Thomas Pollard had career-best performances last weekend in Oregon and will look to continue to build, with both entered in the 800, 1,500 and 5,000m runs along with Jeffery Pedersen and Gable Sieperda. Day went sub-29 for the first time in his career at 10K in 28:55.03, while Pollard clocked his first sub-14 5K in 13:55.27.
At Ole Miss, the focus for the No. 8 ISU men will be middle distance, with more guys ready to shine. Festus Lagat comes into the weekend in the top-5 nationally in both the 800m (third, 1:47.15) and 1,500m (fifth, 3:39.93) and is entered in both events again. He is in a loaded invitational heat of the 1,500m on Friday night that includes nine men who have gone sub-3:40 and will be paced by former Oklahoma State star Craig Nowak.
Jason Gomez was on pacing duties last weekend in Eugene, helping set up Lagat's 1:47.15 and Roshon Roomes' 1:47.87, and will get his chance in Section 2 of the invitational 1,500m on Friday night. The All-American indoors at 800m will join Lagat and Daniel Nixon in the open 800m on Saturday afternoon. Roomes and Alex Lomong are in a strong Section 1 of the invitational 800m Friday night, headlined by NCAA Indoor runner-up at 800 Finley McLear of Miami (OH).
This weekend will also serve as a first chance for ISU to run an 'A' 4x400m relay. Last weekend's 4x400 at Oregon was run without the services of four-time All-American Eric Fogltanz, who was in Florida and went 46.84 in the 400m. Fogltanz is not entered in an individual event this weekend, and is slated to run the 4x400 on Saturday with Gage Clay, Cebastian Gentil and Roomes.
