LAWRENCE, Kansas – Iowa State had another strong day at the Rock Chalk Classic, with the throwers taking a star turn on Saturday, led by a school record-effort by Emily March in the women's discus. On the track in Lawrence, ISU picked up three victories to go with yesterday's pair of wins.
Iowa State's group at the Trials of Miles KC Qualifier at Charles Berkel Memorial Stadium all put up strong performances as well.
Emily March's first throw was her new school record and the stunning 191-2 (58.27m), which was well above her previous best of 165-4 from last weekend's Drake Relays. She backed it up with a 178-10 (54.50m) in round four that was also above the previous school record mark.
March took down Susan Sherman's previous record of 176-5 thrown at the HW Dakota Relays in 2003. Her throw also moves her up to No. 8 in NCAA Division I this season at the time of publication.
Kevin Sakson had a busy double with both the discus and the shot put on his schedule for Saturday, but the Estonian was able to leave Lawrence with impressive performances in both. In the discus, Sakson opened up with a new personal best 185-4 (56.48m) to sit third after one round. Despite a couple more solid throws across his series, it was not until his final throw that he was able to improve again, as he finished with a new best of 187-2 (57.06m) to finish fourth. He also moved up a spot to No. 9 in ISU history for the event.
In the shot put, Sakson finished ninth, recording an outdoor personal best of 57-2 (17.42m) on his second round throw.
On the track, Iowa State picked up three on Saturday. Nehemia Too got his second win of the weekend, following up yesterday's victory in the men's 1,500m, by winning today's sections of the 800-meter run in 1:54.24. In the women's 100-meter hurdles, Kaylyn Hall notched an all-conditions personal best of 13.30w, but the way too generous wind of 5.3 m/s means it is not eligible for NCAA qualifying or the Iowa State record books. Mason Weh was also wind-aided winner of the 110-meter hurdles in 13.68w, but his 7.1 m/s wind also too much for NCAA qualifying and record consideration.
Trials of Miles Kansas City Qualifier
In the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase Olympic Trials Qualifying section, Gable Sieperda ran a bit of his own race, as he was able to stay out of the back of the pack, but was not able to hang onto the lead pack of five. He continued to his own race and ended up taking seventh in a new personal best of 8:51.34, trimming 0.07 off his mark from the Virginia Challenge two weeks ago.
In the men's 5,000-meter run, Thomas Pollard ran with the lead pack for the first half of the race before settling into his own pace and tempo for the remainder of the competition. Pollard finished ninth in 13:59.47, his second sub-14 5K of the season. Mitchell Day worked his way up the field to take 13th in a new outdoor personal best of 14:12.91.
