OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Iowa State (31-21, 6-12 Big 12) dropped two games on the opening day of the 2021 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship, falling 7-4 to No. 10 Texas (39-10, 12-6 Big 12) before a heartbreaking 6-5 loss to No. 9 Oklahoma State (41-8, 15-3 Big 12) to close the day.
Sami Williams went 4-of-4 at the plate with two home runs and a double vs. Oklahoma State. Her first home run broke Iowa State's single-season RBI record and moved her into third on the Big 12's career home runs list.
The senior now has 328 career hits, tied with Norrelle Dickson (Oklahoma – 2004-07) for the most in Big 12 history. Williams will have a chance to go for the record when Iowa State faces Baylor on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Integris Field.
No. 10 Texas 7, Iowa State 4
The Longhorns jumped out to a first-inning lead, plating the first run of the day on a Lauren Burke RBI single to right center. However, Cyclone starting pitcher Shannon Mortimer quickly righted the ship, retiring the Longhorns in order in both the second and third innings.
Iowa State's offense came to life in the top of the fourth inning after going hitless up to that point. Williams and Mikayla Ramos collected back-to-back base hits to give the Cyclones a spark before Alesia Ranches knocked a RBI single of the UT second baseman's head, scoring Williams to tie the game at 1-1.
Texas responded with consecutive RBI base hits by McKenzie Parker and Colleen Sullivan in the home half of the fourth to take a 3-1 advantage. The Longhorns distanced themselves with a four-run sixth inning that included home runs by Kaitlyn Washington and Parker, giving UT a 7-1 cushion.
However, the Cyclones refused to go away quietly. Kasey Simpson and Logan Schaben each came through with RBI base hits in the seventh, while Skyler Ramos tallied another on a fielder's choice to cut the UT lead to 7-4. The rally would end there however, as the Cyclones dropped game one in Oklahoma City.
No. 9 Oklahoma State 6, Iowa State 5
Shelby Pennington hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning, once again putting the Cyclones in an early hole. Similar to Mortimer in game one, ISU starter Ellie Spelhaug responded brilliantly. The sophomore hurler went four straight scoreless innings following Pennington's initial solo homer.
Williams hit her first home run of the day in the home half of the third inning, a solo shot to left center that tied the game and broke ISU's single-season RBI record with her 53rd of the year. The senior from Laguna Niguel, Calif., was not done, however, giving Iowa State its first lead of the day with yet another solo home run in the bottom of the fifth. Williams became the 11th player in Big 12 Championship history with multiple home runs in a game.
The Cyclones scratched out an additional run in the bottom of the sixth when Jamie Pinkerton called for a double steal with runners on the corners. When the throw went to second base in an attempt to catch Skyler Ramos, Kali Gose broke from third base and slide in safe at the plate to make the Cyclone lead 3-1.
Oklahoma State put together a two-out rally in the top of the seventh that included a Chyenne Factor two-RBI triple and consecutive home runs by Alysen Febrey and Hayley Busby, as OSU took a 6-2 lead.
Iowa State once again showed no quit, with Gose and Simpson each tallying RBI base hits to make it a one-run game. The rally would fall just short, as OSU came away with a 6-5 win to clinch a spot in the Big 12 title game.
