AMES, Iowa – Iowa State Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jeremy Sudbury made a pair of additions to his coaching staff on Monday, welcoming Matt Lange as Recruiting Coordinator/Assistant Coach and Cale Wallace as Assistant Coach. Lange comes from George Washington, where he had been Recruiting Coordinator/Assistant Coach the past two seasons, while Wallace has been Assistant Coach at North Dakota the past two years.
Lange will be responsible for recruiting in all areas and events within the program, along with on-campus recruiting logistics and assisting Sudbury in building Iowa State Track and Field/Cross Country's brand. Wallace will assist both the men's and women's cross country programs, while on the track he will specialize in the coaching and development of steeplechase student-athletes.
Lange completed his second season as an assistant coach at George Washington in 2020-21, helping the Colonials build some historic success within the program. The GWU women finished in the top-3 of the Atlantic 10 in cross country each season, having three student-athletes earn All-Conference honors each season.
"I was very impressed with Matt's enthusiasm and communication abilities while I was searching for a recruiting coordinator to help push the envelope in building a Big 12 Championship-caliber program for both genders," Sudbury noted. "He has been in this role previously in addition to being a part of a professional track and field operation. His passion for the sport is contagious and will be an important asset for the future of our programs."
The GWU women also made history during outdoor track season, with Lange's work with steeplechasers Margaret Coogan and Kathryn Nohilly seeing them qualify for the NCAA East Preliminaries, marking the first time GWU had two student-athletes qualify for Regionals in the same event.
Lange finished his collegiate career at George Washington after four years at Furman. At GWU, Lange earned All-Atlantic 10 honors in cross country while being a member of the school's record 4xMile relay team. At Furman, he was an All-Southern Conference honoree in cross country, while scoring across multiple events in the conference championships for track and field.
Wallace's tenure at North Dakota has seen him help lead the Fighting Hawks to new heights. In cross country, UND finished the 2020-21 season in third on the men's side and second for the women at the Summit League Championships, each program's highest conference finish since entering Division I. On the track, UND's middle distance and distance groups tore up the record books across the 2021 season, capped with Erica Eades qualifying for NCAA West Prelims in the women's 800m run, becoming the first UND runner to qualify for West Prelims since 2016.
"Cale's experience as an athlete and coach at Arkansas and North Dakota has made him a well-rounded and exciting addition to our staff," Sudbury said. "His background in the steeplechase and being a part of many team championships will add to our vision as we continue to strive for success within the Big 12 and on the national level."
Wallace spent two seasons as a volunteer assistant at his alma mater Arkansas, where his work with the Razorbacks helped Arkansas women win the 2019 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships, while the men's and women's cross country programs both were the NCAA South Regional champions in 2018.
As a student-athlete at Arkansas, Wallace earned First Team All-America honors running the lead-off for UA's seventh-place distance medley relay squad at the NCAA Indoor Championships. A team captain in both cross country and track, he was an SEC silver medalist outdoors in the steeplechase in 2016 and qualified for the NCAA West Prelims in the steeple in 2016 and 2017.
