AMES, Iowa – Iowa State stayed closer to home for the latest addition to its track and field program, as Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jeremy Sudbury announced the addition of multi-event athlete Thai Thompson from UNI on Monday. Thompson, who spent two seasons in Cedar Falls, has three seasons of eligibility remaining in both indoor and outdoor track and field.
"We are extremely excited about the addition of Thai," Sudbury said. "He is a fearless competitor, and another piece to the buzzle as we transform our program's reach within the state of Iowa."
Thompson owns personal bests of 6,369 outdoors in the decathlon and 5,028 indoors in the heptathlon, both set at the respective Missouri Valley Conference Championships. The Johnston, Iowa native took third at the MVC Outdoor Championships in the decathlon and second at the MVC Indoor Championships in the heptathlon, earning all-conference honors in both and helping the Panthers claim team titles for both.
Along with the multi-events, Thompson was also an important part of UNI's relay teams and hurdles group. He ran to a personal best 52.82 in the 400m hurdles at the South Dakota Tune-Up, and finished seventh indoors in the long jump with a personal best 23-2 3/4 (7.08m).
As a prep at Dowling Catholic High School, Thompson claimed the 2019 Class 4A state title in the 400m hurdles, while also qualifying for state in the long jump and as part of the shuttle hurdle relay. He was also a member of DCHS' Class 4A state-title winning football team in 2018.
