AMES, Iowa – Iowa State track and field will have a familiar face back among its mid-distance ranks for the 2022 track and field season, as Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Jeremy Sudbury announced that Frank Hayes will return to ISU for his senior season of track and field. Hayes, from Sylvania, Ohio, competed for the Cyclones during his freshman season in 2017-18 before transferring to Ohio State for three seasons.
"Frank was one of the first 800m signees we had when we decided we wanted to make our middle-distance group a force at the national level," Sudbury said. "It is only fitting to have him return and see what he can do in his last season of eligibility. His addition to the group gives us incredible elite depth, and can help make the season one to remember."
During his time at OSU, Hayes earned a pair of Second Team All-America honors, being a member of the Buckeyes' 4x400-meter relay during the 2021 indoor season and the 800-meter run during the 2019 indoor campaign. Hayes owns a pair of Big Ten titles indoors, anchoring for the winning 4x400m relay squad in 2021, and claiming the 600m run title in 2019. He is Ohio State's school record holder in the indoor 800m, clocking a 1:47.90 at the Alex Wilson Invitational during the 2019 season. Outdoors, Hayes qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries in the 800m in 2019 and 2021.
Along with his indoor 1:47.90 in the 800m, Hayes has an outdoor 800 meter personal best of 1:49.36 and an indoor 600m PR of 1:17.24.
In his true freshman season at Iowa State, Hayes qualified for the NCAA West Preliminaries in the 800m run during the outdoor season. He was a Big 12 Championships finalist both indoors and outdoors in the 800-meter run, and was a member of the Cyclones' victorious 4x800-meter relay at the 2018 Drake Relays.
