AMES, Iowa - Drake scored on its only two shot attempts of the day Sunday, as the Bulldogs spoiled the home opener for the Iowa State soccer team with a 2-1 victory at the Cyclone Soccer Complex.
The loss dropped the Cyclones to 1-3 on the year, while Drake improved to 1-2-1. Iowa State will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 5 against SIU-Edwardsville. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at the Cyclone Soccer Complex. The match with the Cougars will be broadcast on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
Drake started the scoring in the sixth minute, as Hallie Peak scored the first goal of the year for the Bulldogs. Late in the first half, Mira Emma found Morina Suter-Doerig for her first collegiate goal in the 33rd minute. The assist was the second of the season for Emma and the fifth of her career. Just under three minutes later, Libby Helverson dished a pass to Alison Walls, as she scored her first goal of the season in the 36th minute. Neither team would score in the second half, as Drake held on for the 2-1 victory.
"I'm not sure we've played better than that ever," Iowa State Head Coach Matt Fannon said. "I'm really proud of them. We're a very young team trying to figure it out and I try best not to make all the decisions on how well we're playing based on the result only. We made two mistakes and conceded two goals. Performance wise, I thought we were fantastic."
Iowa State had a 26-2 advantage in shots, including 13-2 in shots on goal. Emma had five shots, while Taylor Bee had a career-high four shots. Bee and Anna Lindgren each had two shots on goal. Jordan Silkowitz allowed both goals in net, as she dropped to 0-2 on the season.Â
