AMES, Iowa – Head coach Christie Martens and her Cyclones have their eyes set on the 2021-22 season. What the Cyclones did last season will be tough to best, but the sky is the limit with this year's squad.
"We have a good balance of returners and some new fresh faces," Martens said. "I am excited to see how they can come together as a team. It was kind of a mixed bag with people being back home and not having much access to tournaments. This fall will be a great time to see where we are and see how we can get better every single day."
The Cyclones are returning five golfers (Taglao Jeeravivitaporn, Liyana Durisic, Ellie Braksiek, Ruby Chou and Charley Jacobs) from last season. The team was ranked No. 38 by Golfstat and No. 42 by Golfweek by the end of last year. Martens has now made 11-straight NCAA Regional appearances and knows how to get the job done.
Beginning the season with such a young roster, the Cyclones will look for contributions from experienced transfer senior, Warda Amira Rawof. Being the only senior on the squad, Rawof will be battle-tested and bring knowledge to a talented, young team.
"Warda has so much experience and she has very high energy. She is steady and so she is kind of a hit it in the fairway, hit it on the green player," commented Martens. "She is a smart player and doesn't really hit it very long and so she embraces more of a grinding mentality."
Coming off one of the best seasons in Cyclone history, Liyana Durisic has everything to look forward to in her young career. Durisic currently holds the lowest career stroke average in school history. That's not all, Durisic also recorded five-straight top-20 finishes during the spring season and helped the Cyclones make the 2021 NCAA Regionals.
"Liyana just has really high expectations for herself," Martens said. "I think one of the things with her is managing all her qualities that she has and how do we keep that in check and take it one day at a time and be your best self every single day."
Taglao Jeeravivitaporn, who is the veteran on the roster, will enter her fourth season as a Cyclone. Jeeravivitaporn holds one of the best career stroke averages in school history (74.34). After totaling 61 birdies in 27 rounds last season, Jeeravivitaporn knows how to go low and will make a positive impact on this season.
"I think all of the positive experiences that she brings from her career are going to create a lot of benefits for our team. I think that leadership that she will present will be big for us," shared assistant coach Taylor Riggs. "She has done a great job this fall progressing with her game and improving and I am excited to see how she does."
Sophomores Charley Jacobs, Ruby Chou and Ellie Braksiek are looking forward to getting things off and rolling this year. Jacobs is coming off an impressive freshman season where she carded a low round of 65, which broke the Cyclone rookie mark and tied for the second lowest round in school history.
Chou appeared in three tournaments last season and had her best finish (T-22nd) at the Betsy Rawls Invite. During that week, Chou fired a season-low 69 in the second round and helped the Cyclones to a fourth-place finish.
Ellie Braksiek is a talented sophomore from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Braksiek competed in three tournaments last season and recorded four birdies. She finished 50th at the Betsy Rawls and the OSU Cowgirl Classic.
Newcomer June Song looks to make an instant impact on the Cyclones this season. Song has an impressive junior resume where she won multiple tournaments and was ranked inside the top-500 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR).
"Balance of competition with each other and pushing each other day by day to get better. In practice and through qualifying and learning from each other as players is how they will bring that to the older players and keep everybody sharp," commented Riggs.
The Iowa State women's golf team will begin their march into the 2021-22 season at the Wolverine Invitational, Sept. 13-14.
