AMES, Iowa – Iowa State returned to its home track for the first time in 2022 and had an outstanding day at the Cyclone Open, picking up three event victories and having many notable and strong performances across the day.
A pair of Cyclone women stood out. Kaylyn Hall had one of her best days as a Cyclone, with the Canadian picking up the victory in the women's 60-meter hurdles in 8.38, just missing out on her personal best by 0.01 seconds. It was an ISU/Canada 1-2, with Katarina Vlahovic taking second place, with her mark of 8.44 taking second.
Hall was then among a trio of Cyclones who put up strong performances in the women's 200-meter dash. That was led by Zakiyah Amos, who took third in a personal best of 24.72, which was good for No. 7 in ISU history, while Hall moved into the top-10 in ninth with a 24.75 en route to finishing fifth. Vlahovic just missed out on her personal best, finishing sixth in 24.77.
Cailie Logue, making her indoor season debut, put up a pair of strong performances at the shorter distances. The fourth place finisher at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, Logue began her day by taking second in the 1,000-meter run in 2:46.54, No. 8 in ISU history in the event. Three hours later, Logue was back on the track and put down a 4:42.01 mile to take third and move to No. 7 in ISU history for the event.
For the Iowa State men, Frank Hayes led the ISU effort in the men's 800-meter run, picking up the win in 1:48.99 and, at the time of publication, ranking No. 9 in NCAA Division I for the event. He led an ISU 1-23 for the event, Alex Lomong taking second in 1:49.34 and Darius Kipyego third in 1:49.67.
In the men's mile, Chad Johnson just missed out on becoming a sub-4 miler, taking fourth place in an extremely fast field in 4:00.74. He led seven Cyclones who were sub-4:12 on the day in the mile, all of whom set personal bests in the event. Johnson's performance moved him up to No. 9 in ISU indoor history for the mile.
In the field, Danielle Hoyle continued her strong start to her Cyclone career with a seventh-place effort in the women's weight throw with a personal best 58-9 1/4 (17.91m).
