AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (13-7, 5-2 Big 12) handed No. 1 Texas (14-1, 6-1 Big 12) their first loss of the season by set scores of 18-25, 27-25, 12-25, 27-25, 15-10. There are now no remaining undefeated teams in the nation.
Iowa State picked up the second win in program history over a No. 1-ranking team. The last victory over a No. 1 team was on Sept. 15, 2012 against Nebraska in four sets. It is also the sixth victory over Texas and ends a 10-match losing streak in the series, the last win over the Longhorns occured Nov. 12, 2016.
Iowa State hit over .300 in the second, fourth and fifth set including .500 in the second set and .405 in the fourth. Texas entered the match with just six total set losses this season as they now hold nine.
Iowa State had four hit 10 or more kills as Maya Duckworth, Eleanor Holthaus and Annie Hatch notched 14 and Solei Thomas hit 11.
Holthaus recorded her seventh-straight match with double-digit kills. The fifth-year senior added 11 digs for her 27th career double-double.
Jaden Newsome put up the 20th double-double of her career with 21 assists and 13 digs. Both Newsome and Holthaus now total seven double-doubles on the season.
Brooke Stonestreet played a vital role at libero, totaling 25 digs and two aces. Stonestreet has seven matches this season with 20 or more digs.
SET ONE
Texas took the first two points before Duckworth put ISU on the board with a kill. Engelbrecht put down another to tie it up. The Longhorns stretched a lead on a 6-0 scoring run while totaling three kills and four blocks as Iowa State called a timeout. As Texas led 20-12, Iowa State entered a run beginning with a Thomas kill. ISU took seven-straight points on account of four kills and a Newsome ace to make it 20-18. Texas put an end to the run and went on to take the set 25-18.
SET TWO
Iowa State hit four kills on seven attempts to start the second and come within one at 5-4. The Cyclones continued to battle, keeping Texas' advantage within one. A libero kill by Stonestreet made it 10-9 as ISU continued hitting over .400 to knot the score at 12. The Cyclones kept up the fight, coming within two at 18-16 and 19-17 on the 13th and 14th ISU kill of the set. Hatch hit seven kills including the set winner as ISU won the set 27-25.
SET THREE
Duckworth's second ace of the match tied the third at 5. Texas took control, leading by 19-10 before Holthaus hit her 10th kill and a Texas attack error trimmed the Longhorns' lead. Texas powered forward to win the set 25-12, holding Cyclone hitting to .111.
SET FOUR
A Thomas and Kelsey Perry block put ISU on the board first. Texas and Iowa State flipped the lead throughout as no advantage was built. Perry totaled her sixth kill on .857 hitting to put the Cyclones within one at 13-12. Both teams found 20 points as Iowa State led 23-21, outhitting Texas .394-.355. The Cyclones never let up to force a fifth, finalizing .405 hitting in the set compared to Texas' .351.
SET FIVE
Two Texas service errors gave Iowa State their first points of the set. Holthaus tipped over a kill to bring the advantage in Iowa State's favor 8-5 as teams switched sides. The Longhorns tied it up at 8, but Iowa State remained in control to lead and take the victory with a set score of 15-10.

Iowa State returns to action Friday, Oct. 21 meeting Texas Tech. The match begins at 6 p.m. at United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock.
