MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Iowa State (15-7, 7-2 Big 12) went out to the Cyclones' second-consecutive sweep, topping West Virginia (7-15, 0-9 Big 12) by set scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-21. ISU is now 7-2 in Big 12 play, marking the best start since the 2013 season.
Eleanor Holthaus (13) and Solei Thomas (12) hit double-figure kills as Iowa State tallied 46 in the match. Holthaus now extends her match streak to nine with 10 or more.
Alexis Engelbrecht became the 10th fastest in program history to notch 100 blocks in a season as she hit the mark in 22 matches and 84 sets. Engelbrecht put up five in the match to total 101 on the season.
Annie Hatch hit seven kills in the match as she passed the 700 mark on her career, now holding 703.
SET ONE
WVU jumped out to a 4-1 lead before ISU tied it up with a kill and two blocks. Both sides kept it even with the lead remaining within two. Holthaus collected her third kill on four attempts as the Cyclones led 13-11. Kate Shannon recorded two aces in the midst of a 5-0 Cyclone scoring run to stretch the lead to 19-14. West Virginia then fought off three set points, but Maya Duckworth sealed the set win with the kill at 25-22.
SET TWO
Another Cyclone run of four-straight points gave ISU the lead at 6-3, including two kills by setter Morgan Brandt. Shannon served up another ace, building Iowa State's lead to 10-6. Holthaus totaled her second ace to pull the Cyclones ahead 16-8, the fifth of the match for ISU. WVU battled back, taking eight straight to tie it at 19. The Cyclones put up the fifth block of the match to retake the lead. Holthaus followed to tally her 10th kill to bring Iowa State to set point at 24-22. Duckworth again ended the set with a kill and a score of 25-23.
SET THREE
Iowa State and West Virginia kept the score within two deep into the set. Engelbrecht tallied the 100th block of her season to bring the score to 12-10 as the junior combined with Duckworth. Both sides continued to battle with 15 tie scores and eight lead changes as ISU led at 20-18. Iowa State pulled away to take the match on an Engelbrecht kill at 25-21.
NEXT UP
Iowa State returns home this Friday, taking on TCU at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are five for $5 at this link. Friday will be the Halloween match with trick or treating and pumpkin decorating on the concourse.
