TOPEKA, Kansas – Iowa State swimmers took care of business on Sunday at the Kansas Classic, bringing home the team victory with 953 points, 46 ahead of Kansas. After strong performances on the weekend across the team, Lucia Rizzo and Sydney Jackson led with the most team points.
"It's exciting to win the Kansas Classic, we've been hovering as bridesmaids for many years and to finally put it all together and win the meet makes me happy for the team," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "It was a total team effort and all twenty-three women scored at some point along the way, so that makes it that more special."
Jackson raced to first place in the 1650 free, clocking a time of 17:01.21 for the first time this season. Her swim now marks as the 15th-fastest performance in school history.
Jackson's victory led an Iowa State 1-2-3 finish in the mile, with Brinley Horras coming in second (17:05.34) and Madison Rundell taking third (17:07.06). Corinne Guist checked in sixth in her collegiate mile debut in 17:15.51.
Winter Craig nailed down a second-place finish in the 200 fly, sealing 2:03.26, just 1.31 seconds off her career best. Also in the 'A' finals was Rizzo who kept the momentum going by finishing in third place, touching the wall at 2:03.89. Mallory Miller swam 2:06.59 to land in sixth.
Elizabeth Richardson raced to 1:58.48 second-place effort in the 200 back 'A' finals, improving her personal record by 0.12 seconds. Following behind was Madi Dohrn who made the all-time top-performers list twice on Sunday, peaking in fifth with a time of 2:00.35. Trinity Kay placed seventh with a time of 2:03.63. In the 'B' finals for the 200 back, Fallon DeWitt placed second touching the wall at 2:02.25.
Carley Caughron didn't tire from making her third swim in 'A' finals as she made a time of 50.92 for third in the 100 free. She is now the 14th-fastest on the all-time top-performers list. Ashley Bengtson swam to a time of 51.43 to end up in seventh place.
Sophia Goushchina was victorious in the 100 free 'B' finals, stopping the clock in at 50.82, just .22 seconds off her PR. The following Cyclones, Andie Quirke (51.61, 12th) and Maddie Ziegert (53.44, 16th) finished out the event.
Alaina Breitbach took the highest placement for the Cyclones in the 200 breast, placing fourth with 2:19.34. Emily Heymans and Madison Rundell also made the 'A' finals, placing in the top-10. Heymans made seventh, touching the wall at 2:22.36 and Rundell in eighth with 2:22.87.
In the 200 breast 'B' finals, Jackson improved her prelims time by 1.14 seconds. She ended in 10th overall, stopping the clock at 2:21.08.
In all, swimmers set 24 lifetime bests and made 13 amends to the record books.
PRELIMS
11 'A' and seven 'B' finals times were recorded by Cyclones in the final prelims session. Madi Dohrn bested the competition in the 200 back to touch with a collegiate-best of 2:00.94. Dohrn penned her name down as the thirteenth-best performer in Iowa State history.
