AMES, Iowa – Yonger Bastida has been named the Big 12 Wrestler of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
This is Bastida's second career Big 12 weekly honor, and it marks the second time in the first five weeks of the season a Cyclone has been recognized.
Bastida defeated Iowa's No. 2 Jacob Warner, a four-time All-American and 2022 NCAA finalist, 4-3, Sunday afternoon inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena. After a pair of first period takedowns to grab an early lead, Bastida showed his athleticism to fend off a late attack from Warner and earn the signature victory.
The Trinidad, Cuba native picked up his sixth win of the young season. Bastida's record now stands at a perfect 6-0.
Bastida has moved up to No. 2 at 197 pounds in FloWrestling's updated rankings.
Iowa State will wrestle next at the Collegiate Duals in New Orleans, Louisiana, on December 19. The Cyclones will face Oregon State, Cornell as well as a third match against an opponent to be determined.
