Cyclones Beat Purdue, 4-3

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Iowa State tennis team returned to the court Sunday after nearly three weeks off and defeated Purdue (5-2), 4-3.

The win improved the Cyclones to 3-0 this season with a matchup with Iowa looming next Friday at Life Time Fitness in Urbandale.

"Gritty performance by our group today," head coach Boomer Saia said. "I was extremely proud of how hard our team fought as It's been a long three weeks since our last match. We were put in some very difficult situations in singles today and we were able to respond as a group. Looking forward to our team continuing to learning from these opportunities and becoming better with each week"

A clean sweep of the doubles matches put the Cyclones ahead early, 1-0. Chie Kezuka and Ange Oby Kajuru made quick work at No. 3 doubles, beating Juana Larranaga and Rut Galindo, 6-1. The point was clinched with a 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles by Thasaporn Naklo and Christin Hsieh.

Oby Kajuru came out hot in singles action with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Purdue's Carmen Gallardo Guevara at No. 2 singles to give ISU the 2-0 lead.

But Purdue wouldn't go quietly as it won at No. 1 and No. 3 to tie it up at 2-2.

Kezuka got the Cyclones back on the right track with a come-from-behind three-set win at No. 5 singles. Kezuka beat Purdue's Galindo, 4-6, 6-2, 6-0, to give ISU a 3-2 lead.

The match went down to No. 4 and No. 6 singles, both of which end up going three sets.

Cyclone newcomer Anna Supapitch Kuearum finished it with a 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Juana Larranaga.

The Iowa State-Iowa match will begin at 5 p.m. with Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series points on the line.
