Drake (4-2) vs. Iowa State (3-0)
Both matches will be played at Life Time Fitness in Urbandale, Iowa. Live stats will be available at Cyclones.com.
THE SERIES
Friday's match will mark the 50th time Iowa State and Iowa have faced off in the Cy-Hawk series. The Hawkeyes have gotten the better of the Cyclones throughout history, holding an 41-8 record in the series, but Iowa State won the most recent matchup in 2020. With the score tied 3-3 and the match on the line, Chie Kezuka battled back from a one-set deficit at No. 5 singles to secure the Cyclones' first victory over the Hawkeyes since 1976.
Iowa State and Drake will play for the 59th time in series history on Sunday. Drake holds a narrow 30-28 lead in the series, but the Cyclones have won five straight and nine out of the past 11 against the Bulldogs. Last season, Iowa State made quick work of their in-state rival, cruising to a 6-1 victory in Des Moines.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend, Iowa State was on the road, battling another Big Ten opponent in Purdue. The Cyclones quickly swept all three doubles matches, but the Boilermakers kept it close by winning at the No. 1 and No. 3 slots in singles. The comeback effort was not enough, though, as Iowa State picked up three singles victories to win the match, 4-3.
PLAYER TO WATCH
Chie Kezuka has been on an absolute tear in her third year as a Cyclone. She holds a 7-2 doubles record and an 11-3 singles record, giving her the best winning percentage on the team.
Kezuka currently sits in third place on the all-time wins list at No. 5 singles. She needs just one win to tie Ann Backhaus for second place on the list.Â
FRESHMEN ROLLING
Iowa State's freshmen Ange Oby Kajuru and Anna Supapitch Kuearum has impacted winning immediately this spring. The pair is a combined 6-0 in singles action, while also remaining unbeaten in their doubles matches (5-0).
CY-HAWK UPDATE
Iowa State is holding a 10-9 lead with three competitions remaining as the annual series will go down to the end.
