URBANDALE, Iowa - Iowa State swept in-state rival Iowa, 4-0, Friday night at Life Time Fitness. It was the Cyclones' second consecutive win over the Hawkeyes and extended their home-winning streak to 20 matches in a row.
"They came out ready to play and it was exciting to see," said head coach Boomer Saia. "It was such a battle for the doubles point and then to come set the tone in singles. I think winning five of the six, and even that sixth match at No. 1 singles, to turn that around we're giving ourselves a chance at all six spots. Really pleased with how we came out mentally and man, just really closed the door when we had the opportunity, so I couldn't be prouder. This is our second win in consecutive matches against the Hawkeyes and they're a tough group, so it means a lot to get that win."
The Hawkeyes came out hot in doubles, jumping out to early leads at courts No. 1 and No. 2, but the Cyclones were able to battle back. The No. 1 pairing of Thasaporn Naklo and Christin Hsieh recovered and beat the Marisa Schmidt and Samantha Gillas Iowa pairing, 6-4.Â
Then the No. 36-ranked doubles team in the nation, Sofia Cabezas and Miska Kadleckova led their own comeback. Down 5-4, the talented duo of sophomores stormed back, taking three straight games to win the match, 7-5, and secure the doubles point for Iowa State.
In singles play, the Cyclones stormed out to an early lead as they won the first set in five out of six matches.Â
Anna Supapitch Kuearum dominated her Hawkeye opponent Vipasha Mehra, 6-0, 6-3, to give Iowa State its first singles point. Not long after, Cabezas finished Barbora Pokorna on court six to give the Cyclones a commanding 3-0 lead.
To complete the sweep, Miska Kadleckova delivered the final blow to the Hawkeyes, beating Michelle Bacalla 6-2, 6-4.
Iowa State now leads the Cy-Hawk Series, 12-9, with gymnastics and softball remaining.
Iowa State returns to Life Time Fitness on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. for a home match against another in-state rival, Drake.
