URBANDALE, Iowa - No. 28 Iowa State downed No. 47 Memphis, 4-2, at home Sunday afternoon to extend its undefeated start to the season. The Cyclones move to 11-0 this spring, which is the best start to any season in program history. Memphis fell to 13-5 with the loss.
The win also stretches Iowa State's home winning streak to 23 matches in a row. It was ISU's fourth top-50 win this season.
Doubles play was tightly contested throughout, especially at courts one and three. After the 55th-ranked pairing of Miska Kadleckova and Sophia Cabezas took the win at No. 2 doubles, the Cyclones found themselves trailing in the remaining two matches.
Memphis eventually won at court one to even things up, leaving No. 3 doubles to decide the first point of the match. Despite a comeback effort by Chie Kezuka and Ange Oby Kajuru, the Tiger pairing of Emily Meyer and Monique Woog were able to pull away and win to take the doubles point for Memphis.
"I'm so proud of this team," associate head coach Kenna Kilgo said. "They showed just how tough they could be. We haven't lost too many doubles points this year, so for them to respond in the fashion they did was incredible."
Kezuka kicked off singles play with a dominant 6-1, 6-2 win over Woog to earn the Cyclones first point and even the match up at 1-1. The victory extended Kezuka's unbeaten singles streak to start the spring, putting her at a perfect 9-0.
At No. 2 singles, Ange Oby Kajuru beat a tough opponent in Aran Teixido Garcia in straight sets while Sophia Cabezas downed Camila Soares at court six to give Iowa State a commanding 3-1 advantage.
The Tigers would respond, winning at No. 4 singles, but Iowa State's firepower proved to be too much. With Miska Kadleckova and Thasaporn Naklo locked into three-set battles and the Cyclones needing just one more victory to secure the match, it was Kadleckova who came through with the final blow, beating Memphis' Alisha Reayer 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 and earning the win for the Cyclones.
Iowa State will be back at home on Friday to open up Big 12 play against No. 33 Baylor.
