THE SERIES
Texas Tech and Iowa State will meet for the 31st time on Friday in a series that dates back to 1987. The Red Raiders hold a 28-2 record over the Cyclones, but Iowa State's two wins both came last season. The Cyclones won, 4-3, at home to earn their first win ever over Texas Tech and then beat the Red Raiders again, 4-1, in the first round of the Big 12 Tennis Championship. Iowa State will now be looking for their first road win in Lubbock.
Sunday will mark the ninth all-time match between the Cyclones and Horned Frogs. TCU leads the series 7-1, but Iowa State took last season's matchup, winning, 4-3, at home. Miska Kadleckova, Chie Kezuka, and Sofia Cabezas all earned singles victories in the match to propel Iowa State to its first-ever win over the Horned Frogs.
LAST TIME OUT
The Cyclones dropped their first two matches of the season last week, losing to two Big 12 opponents ranked in the top 30. On Friday, Iowa State lost a close 4-3 battle to No. 26 Baylor and then lost 6-1 to the reigning national champions and No. 6-ranked Texas on Sunday.
PLAYER TO WATCH
Chie Kezuka hasn't lost a singles match since Oct. 23 of last year, and that loss was in the round of 16 at the ITA Central Regional Championship to the No. 26 player in the country. She's currently riding an 11-match winning streak and has an overall singles record of 19-3, good for the best winning percentage on the team. She's also been performing in doubles, holding a 12-4 record on the season.
CYCLONE TENNIS QUICK HIT
Last season's victories over Texas Tech and TCU were Iowa State's third and fourth-ranked victories in program history and the first since 2010. The Cyclones have added eight more ranked wins since those matches.
