No. 26 Iowa State Takes Down No. 50 VCU to Remain Undefeated

RICHMOND, Virginia - No. 26 Iowa State defeated No. 50 VCU on the road Friday evening, 5-2, to earn its third straight win over a ranked opponent and post the best start in school history. The unbeaten Cyclones improve to 8-0 while the Rams fall to 10-2.
VCU jumped out first in doubles play, taking the win at court two, 6-2. Iowa State responded with a win at court one where Thasaporn Naklo and Christin Hsieh survived a late surge by the Rams to win 6-4.Â
With the doubles point on the line, the No. 3 pairing of Ange Oby Kajuru and Chie Kezuka finished off the Karlova/Sorkin duo to remain undefeated together this season. Iowa State has now taken the doubles point in all eight matches this spring.
In singles action, VCU kept it tight at the start. Ange Oby Kajuru struck first with a 6-4, 6-0 win at court two, and Miska Kadleckova followed suit, beating Gabriela Davidescu 7-5, 6-2 not long after to give the Cyclones a commanding 3-1 lead.
The Rams were able to close the gap by winning at No. 4 singles, but Chie Kezuka's dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over Anja Draskovic clinched the match for Iowa State. The teams continued to play out the match giving Sophia Cabezas the opportunity to add another win, which she did, beating Laura Astudillo 7-5, 6-2.
Iowa State returns to action for another road match against William & Mary on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. CT.
