MANHATTAN, Kansas - No. 33 Iowa State won its second straight conference match, beating No. 50 Kansas State, 4-2, in Manhattan on Friday. The Cyclones move to 13-3 on the season and 2-3 in Big 12 play. The Wildcats fall to 8-9 overall and 0-5 in conference action.Â
It was Iowa State's first road win against K-State since 2015 and its seventh ranked victory of the season.
"We came out ready to go in the doubles and that helped carry momentum into our singles. It was windy conditions and all of our players battled hard," said head coach Boomer Saia. "Manhattan is a tough place to play and we had to step up in big moments to get the road win. Very proud of this groups response after a tough start to the conference season. Excited to go compete Sunday again with our team!"Â
Iowa State looked dominant in doubles play as they quickly took the match's first point with two blowout wins. The No. 1 pairing of Thasaporn Naklo and Christin Hsieh got things started with a quick 6-2 win, beating Karine-Marion Job and Maria Linares. At court three, Chie Kezuka and Ange Oby Kajuru also took a 6-2 victory over K-State's Dinara Alloyarova and Manami Ukita to secure the doubles point for the Cyclones.Â
Iowa State kept its momentum going in singles action, jumping out to early leads in four out of six slots. Chie Kezuka, this week's ITA Universal Player of the Week, was the first to add to the Cyclone lead, winning her 14th-straight singles match in dominant fashion, beating Ukita, 6-0, 6-1. Ange Oby Kajuru followed with a strong showing of her own, beating K-State's Job, 6-1, 6-2, to put Iowa State up 3-0.
Despite being in a 3-0 hole, the Wildcats continued to battle, taking wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles to close the gap. However, Iowa State proved too much as Miska Kadleckova came up with a clutch win at court three to clinch the win for the Cyclones. The victory broke Kadleckova's tie with Kirsten Fagen for 2nd-place on Iowa State's all-time wins list at No. 3 singles.
The Cyclones will now travel to Lawrence for another Big 12 match against No. 22 Kansas on Sunday.
