LAWRENCE, Kansas - No. 33 Iowa State beat No. 22 Kansas, 5-2, on the road Sunday afternoon for their third-straight conference win. The Cyclones improve to 14-3 on the season and 3-3 in Big 12 play. All three of Iowa State's Big 12 victories have come on the road, setting a new school record for wins away from home. Kansas falls to 13-7 overall and 3-3 in conference action.
The win was Iowa State's first ever in Lawrence and the first time the Cyclones have defeated the Jayhawks in back-to-back matches since 1981. It's also Iowa State's highest-ranked victory of all time.
"I'm unbelievably proud of our group," head coach Boomer Saia said. "What a team win, to come on the road and win against a top-25 team. I'm really proud of how we responded in certain big moments. That's what it takes to win a big match. We showed up at every spot in singles and doubles and gave ourselves a great chance to win. It was a huge win for us and we need to use this as momentum going into next weekend."
Doubles play was tightly contested throughout, but Iowa State was able to close down the stretch to take the match's first point. After the Jayhawks won at court two, the No. 1 pairing of Thasaporn Naklo and Christin Hsieh evened things up, winning their second-straight conference match, 6-4, against the 54th-ranked pairing of Maria Titova and Malkia Ngounoue.Â
With the doubles point on the line, Chie Kezuka and Ange Oby Kajuru came up clutch at the No. 3 slot, also taking a 6-4 victory over the tough Kansas pairing of Sonia Smagina and Carmen Roxana Manu, securing the first point for Iowa State.
The Cyclones continued their strong play in singles action, taking the first set in four out of six matches. Ange Oby Kajuru struck first for Iowa State, taking the win in a three-set battle against Ngounoue. Kajuru's fellow freshman, Anna Supapitch Kuearum, followed with a straight-set victory at court four to put the Cyclones up 3-0.
With Iowa State holding a commanding lead, Chie Kezuka clinched the match for the Cyclones, beating Tiffany Lagarde 6-0, 7-6 at the No. 5 slot. The win marked Kezuka's 15th-straight win in a singles decision and continued her unbeaten start to the spring season. It was also Kezuka's 31st career win at No. 5 singles, putting her in a tie for the most in program history.
Miska Kadleckova was locked into a grudge match with Kansas' Smagina. The two split sets, forcing a third-set tiebreaker which Kadleckova won, 10-7, to take the match.
Next weekend, Iowa State returns to its home courts for two matches against Big 12 foes No. 3 Oklahoma and No. 11 Oklahoma State.
