DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State wrapped up competition at the Drake Relays on Saturday, putting up some strong performances on the track and in the field on a cold and rainy Saturday at Drake Stadium.
Though ISU was not able to defend its men's Relays Cup championship, the Cyclones did battle valiantly. In the sprint medley relay, Darius Kipyego was given the baton in fourth place and put up a big final leg to bring the Cyclones up to second place in 3:20.39. He was joined on the relay by Joven Nelson, Gage Clay and Cebastian Genitl.
The Iowa State men saw their chances of defending their distance medley relay title take a hit on the second exchange when Jason Gomez fell after the hand-off from Charlie Johnson. Gomez and Chad Johnson were able to put up a bit of a rally, bring the Cyclones back up to eighth place with a finishing time of 9:50.90.
In the field, the women's hammer throw saw a big personal best from Antonella Creazzola, with the Venezuelan continuing to improve her career best marks, finishing ninth with a best of 199-10 (60.92m). Her improvement of over six feet also saw her shoot up from No. 2 in program history. The throw also moves her up to tied for 50th in NCAA Division I in the hammer throw for the season.
