LAS VEGAS – Four Iowa State wrestlers have punched their tickets to the world team trials after competing at the USMC US Open in Las Vegas.
Ian Parker, Julien Broderson and Marcus Coleman all qualified for the trials based on their finish at the tournament, while David Carr had automatically qualified based on his third-place finish at the NCAA Championships in March.
Competing at 65 kg, Parker went 6-1 and finished third. Both Coleman and Broderson competed at 86 kg, as Coleman finished second and Broderson finished seventh. Coleman went 4-1, while Broderson was 3-2.
Parker's lone loss in the competition came in the quarterfinals against Matthew Kolodzik, who eventually finished second. Following the loss, Parker rattled off four-straight victories in the consolation side.
Coleman opened the event with a fall over Kyle Summers and used a pair of 10-0 technical falls in the quarterfinals and semifinals to reach the championship match, where he fell to Mark Hall.
Broderson had a bye in the first round before picking up an 18-6 technical fall over John Stout. Hall defeated Broderson in the quarterfinals, but bounced back for a 7-5 victory over Christian Lafragola in the consolation round. Broderson earned a win via forfeit in the seventh-place match.
The 2022 world team trials are set for May 21-22 in Coralville at Xtream Arena. Winners, and some of the runner-ups, will advance to Final X in June. Final X is the last step in the Senior World Team Trials process. which will determine the 2022 U.S. Senior World Team that will compete in Belgrade, Serbia, Sept. 12-18.
