AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team keeps making history.
The Cyclones earned a spot in the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Tournament for the second time in school history and the second time in as many seasons.
Iowa State will head to Cary, North Carolina, to face No. 28 South Carolina on Saturday at 9 a.m. (CT) at Cary Tennis Park. The winner of the match between the Cyclones and Gamecocks will face the winner of North Carolina and South Carolina State on Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT).
It will be a rematch for the Cyclones and Gamecocks from the NCAA Tournament a season ago. In that match in Raleigh, North Carolina, Iowa State shocked the nation with a 4-2 win over 24th-ranked South Carolina to advance to the round of 32.
"I'm really proud of this group for all the work they put into this season and what they have accomplished," head coach Boomer Saia said. "For Iowa State to reach the NCAA Tournament in back-to-back seasons after not having done so before says a lot about their effort, resiliency and determination."
The 32nd-ranked Cyclones went 16-6 during the regular season, collecting six wins against top-50 teams. ISU defeated Kansas and TCU on the road for the first time in school history and finished 9-2 in matches away from home during the season.
Iowa State recently had two players recognized as the Big 12 Individual Champions at No. 5 singles (Chie Kezuka) and No. 3 doubles (Kezuka and Ange Oby Kajuru).
Thasaporn Naklo and Kajuru have solidified the top two spots in the lineup for the Cyclones and are currently ranked No. 59 and No. 87, respectively.
