STANFORD, Calif. – The Iowa State women's golf team finished in a tie for fifth place with Northwestern University after firing a 287 (68-71-74-74) in the first round of the NCAA Stanford Regional.
The Cyclones' 287 is the school's lowest NCAA Regional first round score and tied the school's third-lowest overall NCAA Regional score.
With help from a record-breaking performance by Ruby Chou, the team is eight shots behind LSU who leads the tournament at five-under par.
After firing a three-under 68 in round one, Chou officially broke the school record for lowest recorded 18-hole score in an NCAA Regional. This was the sixth time a Cyclone posted a round in the 60's in NCAA Regional history.
Chou carded a two-over 38 on her front nine, but flipped a switch and played her final nine holes at five-under par. With six recorded birdies on the day, Chou currently sits in second place and is only one shot behind the leader.
Not far behind is Taglao Jeeravivitaporn, who posted an even round of 71 that included three birdies. With a tie for 12th place finish, Jeeravivitaporn is comfortably inside the Top-15 going into round two.
Liyana Durisic and Warda Amira Rawof carded rounds of 74 and sit in a tie for 31st place. Durisic and Rawof combined for seven total birdies, and each finished at three-over.
After the final round the top-four teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, located in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Cyclones will look to climb into the top-four in the second round beginning Tuesday morning at 10:00 a.m. CT.
