AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (12-3, 3-1 Big 12) fell to No. 18 Baylor (7-6, 1-2 Big 12) in three sets (18-25, 22-25, 17-25) Sunday afternoon, dropping the first conference match of the season.
Baylor hit at nearly an efficiency of .400, outhitting the Cyclones .396-.198 through the match. Nayeli Gonzalez was the lone Cyclone in double figures with 10 kills, achieving the total at .333 hitting.
SET ONE
Lilly Wachholz recorded Iowa State's first kill to knot things at 3s, while the teams tied up the score for each point up until 8-8. With Baylor ahead 16-14, Gonzalez had a big swing to notch her third kill of the set. The Bears would remain ahead, reaching 20 points on a run of four (20-15). The Bears went on to take the first 25-18, outhitting the Cyclones .467-.179. The set totaled 11 tie scores and four lead changes.
SET TWO
ISU took the first three points before Baylor got on the board. The set again saw even scoring while Jordan Hopp put down her fifth kill on five swings as Baylor held the narrow lead of 12-11. ISU would go up by two at 16-14 after a block put up by Wachholz and Pam McCune, and would remain ahead until Baylor tied it at 17. McCune put the score at 18-18 with a kill, but Baylor would hold the lead from there.
SET THREE
Baylor jumped out to a lead of 10-5 while hitting over .500 as the third set began. The Cyclones then trimmed Baylor's advantage down to two (11-9) on Alexis Engelbrecht's third kill with a perfect hitting percentage. The Bears ran ahead from there 23-13, still hitting over .500. Two kills by Gonzalez and an ace by Morgan Brandt followed, but a Baylor kill halted the run and brought the visitors to match point. The Cyclones fought it off once, but the Bears would seal the victory with a set score of 25-17.
