AMES, Iowa - Sam Schuyler has been named the Cyclone Club Student-Athlete of the Week after two wins over top-25 opponents last weekend, securing dual victories for the Cyclones against both West Virginia and No. 18 Pittsburgh.
Schuyler earned wins over No. 25 Michael Wolfgram (WVU) and No. 5 Dayton Pitzer (PITT) Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Schuyler's victory over Pitzer was a thrilling end to a high-intensity dual. With Iowa State trailing Pittsburgh, 15-12, entering the heavyweight match, Schuyler delivered a match-winning, and dual-clinching, takedown with less than 15 seconds on the clock as the Cyclones went on to win 16-15 by criteria. The Cyclone senior got in on a leg with roughly 30 seconds remaining and managed to limp-arm out of a Pitzer whizzer to secure the takedown.
Friday against West Virginia, the dual score was 17-13 in favor of the Cyclones heading into the 285 matchup, but ISU needed a win from Schuyler to put the meet away. A takedown in the first period and a pair of hard rides led Schuyler to a 4-2 decision over Wolfgram, securing the dual win for Iowa State.
Schuyler now has five victories over ranked opponents this season, including three inside the top 15. The victory over Pitzer marks the highest ranked win of his career.
The Cyclones are back on the road for a dual at Northern Iowa Friday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. Iowa State then returns home for a dual against Illinois on Feb. 12 (Beauty and the Beast). Tickets are available, here.
