Cyclones Lead Multi-Events After Day One

SAN DIEGO, California – The Cyclones end the first day of the Aztec Invitational with Thai Thompson leading the decathlon standings while Sydney Willits holds the lead in the heptathlon.
The heptathlon began with the Cyclones claiming second through fourth place in 100-meter hurdles. In a field of 22 heptathletes, Kiersten Fisher crossed the finish line second with 14.62 while Willits hit a PR of 14.68 and Ava Cinnamo clocked 14.81.
Willits tied for third in the high jump as she cleared 5-3 3/4 (1.62m), moving the sophomore to second in the heptathlon standings. Willits then closed the first day with the 200m dash victory, going sub-25 seconds for the first time in her career with 24.98 to move into first place in the standings.
Willits holds the lead after four events with 3,061 points, 19 ahead of second. Fisher ends the first day in sixth with 2,803 points while Cinnamo sits in seventh with 2,779 points.
In the first event of the decathlon, Thai Thompson won the 100m dash with a time of 11.07. Thompson followed that with a win in the long jump of 21-11 1/2 (6.69m) to lead the overall standings by 186 points.
Thompson then notched two personal bests with his victory in the 400m (49.21) and a third-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 36-5 1/2 (11.11m).
Halfway through the decathlon, Thompson holds a strong lead with 3,721 points, 201 ahead of the next competitor.
The decathlon continues tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m. CT with the discus, pole vault, javelin, 1,500m run and 100m hurdles. Heptathlon action will resume at 11:15 a.m. with the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run.
