AMES, Iowa – Three Cyclones are set to compete at the 2023 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. March 10-11. Cam Jones notched his qualifying spot in the weight throw while Jason Gómez and Cebastian Gentil are entered for the 800-meter run.
ESPN+ will stream the event live and will be re-aired on ESPNU Sunday, March 12th at 5 p.m. CT and Monday, March 13th at 6 p.m.
Heading into the championships, the men are ranked in the USTFCCCA National Rating Index at No. 21.
Men's Weight Throw – 8 p.m. CT Friday
Jones comes into the event as the No. 4 seed with a mark of 76-4 1/2 (23.27m), the ISU school record to earn him the Big 12 title. Jones is the first weight throw Big 12 champion in program history and the third weight thrower to advance to NCAA Championships. Jones first broke the school record with 72-11 1/4 (22.23m) at the Cyclone Open in January and has passed the mark of 70 feet in three meets.
The leading mark among the field of 16 stands at 79-11 1/2 (24.37m). Jones begins competition at 8 p.m. Friday.
Men's 800m Run Semifinal – 8:45 p.m. CT Friday
All 16 qualifiers have run times of 1:47.28 or faster in the elite field. Gómez enters with the No. 4-ranked time of 1:46.53, the second-fastest in school history. Gentil holds the No. 8-ranking time among the field with 1:46.75, the third-fastest in school history. Both recorded their qualifying times at the Tyson Invite on Feb. 11. Gómez had a runner-up finish to the No. 2-seed Sam Austin (1:46.06) at the Tyson Invite while Gentil raced head-to-head with the No. 3-seed Crayton Carrozza at Big 12 Championships for the silver medal, .33 seconds behind Carrozza.
Iowa State is one of just two schools to have two entries in the event. Semifinals begin at 8:45 p.m. Friday while both Gómez and Gentil race in heat two. The top three from each heat plus the next two fastest times will advance to the final on 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
