DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa State women's 4x1600-meter relay took hold of ISU's second-ever Drake Relays title in the event and first since 2013 to mark the third day at Drake.
The Cyclones got right to work in the first event of the day, locking down the women's 1,600m relay Drake Relays title in 19:04.56, finishing over 20 seconds before the next finisher. The squad of Madelynn Hill, Ashlyn Keeney, Janette Schraft and Cailie Logue smashed the 2014 program record of 19:13.62. The time is the fourth-fastest in Drake Relays history.
The men's 4x1,600m team finished runner-up, being narrowly edged by Air Force who crossed the finish line .38 seconds before. Kelvin Bungei (4:08.32), Gable Sieperda (4:07.92), Emanuel Galdino (4:06.22) and Titus Winders (4:01.23) combined for a time of 16:23.69.
Kaylyn Hall cruised to a new 100m hurdle personal record of 13.16 while coming .06 seconds from the program record, posting the top time in prelims to earn another run in tomorrow's final. Hall improves her mark as the second-ranking 100m hurdler in Iowa State history. The time currently is tied for the 25th-fastest in the nation this season.
In the men's discus, Kevin Sakson claimed a runner-up finish with 185-4 (56.49m), coming just over a foot off his season best. Sakson's mark also neared his No. 7 ISU ranking PR of 187-10. On the women's side, Emily March put up a strong performance of 171-0 (52.13m). The senior placed third in finals with the mark.
Sakson then threw in the shot put championship, throwing a season best on his first attempt. Sakson went on to secure seventh with 58-4 (17.78m).
Cam Jones hit a lifetime best in the shot put with a throw of 62-0 1/4 (18.90m), hitting the mark on his sixth and final attempt to debut on the all-time performance list at No. 6. The sophomore is now an all-time performer in four events. Jones passed 60 feet in half of his attempts as he won the university division shot put event.
In the women's university division discus, Rebecca Manteuffel posted an ISU PR of 165-5 (50.43m) to improve her mark as the sixth-best performer in program history and place fourth in the event. Manteuffel then competed in the university division shot put, nearly hitting a season best with 48-6 (14.78m) for third, right behind freshman Jadan Brumbaugh who notched herself a personal-best 48-8 (14.83m).
At the Kip Janvrin Open, Zach Verzani led the Cyclones in the hammer throw with a third-place throw of 184-10 (56.34m), an ISU PR that comes two feet off the 10th-best mark in Iowa State history.
Iowa State returns tomorrow for the final day of the Drake Relays, while the 4x800m squad will run at Penn Relays and three Cyclones compete at the Desert Heat Classic.
