CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Iowa State women's golf team is set to open the year in the Top 25. In the Preseason Mizuno WGCA Coaches Poll, the Cyclones check in at No. 21.
Iowa State is one of four Big 12 schools ranked in the preseason poll. Texas is ranked eighth, while Baylor (12th) and Oklahoma State (19th) are also ranked. Central Florida and Texas Tech were among those schools receiving votes.
The Cyclones are coming off another record-breaking season, as Iowa State qualified for the NCAA Regionals for the 13th-straight season. Iowa State also set an NCAA record last year for the lowest 54-hole score with a 60-under 804 at the MountainView Collegiate. The Cyclones 286.9 stroke average was the lowest in school history for 54 holes.
Four returners will pace Iowa State this season, led by returning All-American Karisa Chul-Ak-Sorn. The reigning WGCA National Freshman of the Year, Chul-Ak-Sorn returns after setting the single-season stroke record last season at 70.56. Liyana Durisic enters her final season as a Cyclone with the best career scoring average in school history at 72.82. Last year she turned in an average of 72.26, the third-best in school history. Freshman Pammy Chookaew had the fourth-best year in school history with a 72.74. Ruby Chou enters her final season at Iowa State with a 75.03 career stroke average, the seventh-best in school history.
The Cyclones open the season Sept. 11-12 at the Dick McGuire Invitational, hosted by New Mexico In Albuquerque. Iowa State won the event in 2012.
