AMES, Iowa – No. 23 Iowa State (9-2, 0-0 Big 12) downed Drake (7-5, 0-0 MVC) in straight sets (25-22, 25-15, 25-28) Saturday for the Cyclones' second-straight sweep to close the non-conference slate. Iowa State secured the fifth sweep of the season with the victory.
Maya Duckworth dialed in her second double-double of the season with 12 kills and 15 digs while Morgan Brandt had her seventh with 36 assists and 13 digs. Duckworth entered the match with 390 career kills and passed the milestone of 400 with the total.
Lilly Wachholz led the match with 13 kills at a dominating .306 hitting percentage while Nayeli Gonzalez made for three Cyclones in double figures with 12.
Brooke Stonestreet had her fourth 20-plus dig performance on the season totaling 28 through the three sets. Stonestreet set an ISU set season best with 19 in the first set.
SET ONE
The match began with Duckworth slamming down three early kills to tie the score at 4. After Drake jumped out to a lead of 13-9, Iowa State came back within two at 17-15 as Drake called a timeout. The Bulldogs again gained on their lead, but ISU pulled back within one at 19-18. The Cyclones then took the lead at 22-21 on a Gonzalez ace and held onto it to take the set 25-22. Duckworth led the set with six kills.
SET TWO
Duckworth and Alexis Engelbrecht each had a solo stuff to begin the second with the Cyclones ahead 6-4. A successful Iowa State challenge kept the Cyclones on a scoring run, going on to take seven straight (13-7). ISU never lost sight of the lead, sealing the second set 25-15 on a kill by Gonzalez as the Cyclones hit at .316 through the set.
SET THREE
Iowa State built a lead of 6-1 before Drake came back to knot the score. The Cyclones then took the lead back while Wachholz joined Duckworth in double figures and brought in an ace to make it 14-8. The Cyclones powered on to take the set 25-18, led by five kills in the set by Gonzalez.
NEXT UP
The Cyclones now move to conference play. Iowa State will start on the road, meeting West Virginia for a series played Sept. 21 and 22.
