URBANDALE, Iowa – The Iowa State Cyclones tennis team started its season strong with two wins over South Dakota and Missouri State.
Iowa State 4, South Dakota 2
Iowa State head coach Jaron Maestas got his first win at the school as the Cyclones defeated South Dakota, 4-2, Saturday morning at Life Time Fitness.
Iowa State continued its dominance during season openers, improving to 4-0 in season openers in the last four seasons.
The day started with doubles action as Anna Supapitch Kuearum and Isabella Dunlap dominated South Dakota's Paige Alter and Amanda de Olivera, 6-0. Juliette Nask and Ashlee Narker would clinch the doubles point soon after taking down Grace Chadick and Anna Medvyedeva, 6-2.
Freshman doubles pair Valeska San Martin Ramirez and Gala Arangio would battle Sorcha Caves and Selena Bird taking a lead, 4-3, before the match was abandoned.
In singles action, Kuearum would start off on the right foot against South Dakota's de Olivera, sweeping both sets, 6-0, 6-0. Kuearum would go perfect for the day, having not lost a game in her singles or doubles match. Dunlap would keep it going against Sorcha Caves dominating the second set to take the match, 6-3, 6-1.
Nask would go up against Medvyedyeva, falling in the first set, 3-6, before taking the lead, 4-3, in the second. She would be forced to retire from the match due to injury. Arangio would fall to Bird in singles, 6-3, 6-3, making it 3-2 Cyclones with two matches still on the court.
San Martin, who arrived on campus in January, came up big for the Cyclones. She grabbed her first singles win of the season to clinch the match for Iowa State with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Alter.

Iowa State 4, Missouri State 1
Iowa State followed the win over South Dakota with a shorthanded win against Missouri State.
Due to injuries sustained in the first match, the Cyclones were reduced to five players. Because of this Iowa State forfeited one doubles match and the number six singles spot to Missouri State.
First-time partners Narker and San Martin paired up in doubles to take down Missouri State's Tuana Gunal and Juliette Robinson, 6-2. Kuearum and Dunlap then clinched the doubles point after coming from behind to take down Cristina Flaquer and Nicole Ross, 6-4.
In singles, Dunlap got the Cyclones started off right with a dominant win over Missouri State's Mary Houston, 6-0, 6-2, to give Iowa State the lead.
Narker followed Dunlap's win up quickly by taking down Robinson, 6-3, 6-3, to put the Cyclones within one point of clinching the win.
Finally, Kuearum stepped up to the plate and finished off Missouri State's Flaquer, 6-4, 6-2, to clinch the match for the Cyclones.
"I think we're a young team but we're a gritty team, we're just going to keep getting better as the season goes on, but the toughness isn't something that can be taught. They came with that, so we're excited about that." said head coach Jaron Maestas.
