IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa State Swimming and Diving ends day one confident at the Hawkeye Invite. The Cyclones had two personal bests and seven top 16 finishes across day one.
The 500 freestyle kicked off the first event of the invite. Corinne Guist advanced to finals and placed 23rd overall with a season best time of 5:02.26. Sophie Schmitz followed Guist in 29th while the two competed against more than 50 other swimmers in the event.
Mallory Miller set her personal best and earned the tenth best performer title in school history in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.00, earning a place in the B finals. Miller placed 14th overall during finals. Emma Kuhn was exactly one second behind Miller in the prelims, but placed 13th in finals and recorded her season best for 2024-25. Fallon DeWitt followed Kuhn with a 33rd place finish after a swim off in the preliminary event.
Carley Caughron also collected a season best time of 23.21, placing 15th in the 50 freestyle final to lead a solid group of finishes from Iowa State. Freshman Grace Swoboda joined Caughron in the top 35 and earned her personal best time of 23.63. Andie Quirke (23.88) and Kayla Bulseco (23.91) also finished in the top 45 for ISU in a field with 75 other competitors.
Iowa State had two quartets finish in the top 15 of the 200 freestyle relay. Caughron, Quirke, Bulseco and Swoboda took 13th with a time of 1:33.55 while Lydia McClugage, Keirlyn Mullica, Megan Marquardt, and Lili Neisser followed in 15th with a time of 1:34.25. Kuhn, Swoboda, Caughron, and Quirke combined in the 400 medley relay for the Cyclones and finished 11th overall with a time of 3:43.64.
Head coach Matt Leach is excited for the next two days of competition.
"After the first day of racing, we have had some solid swims and are looking forward to tomorrow," said Leach. "The finals session was the best racing of the day. We are excited to take this confidence into tomorrow."
In one-meter diving, Kate Mitchell placed 12th overall with a score of 267.80, making zone diving cuts for the second time this season. Abby Tollefson finished 20th with a score of 248.60, also earning points for the Cyclones. Ally Blumenfeld finished one-meter dive 26th for ISU, scoring 234.05.
Tomorrow, the Cyclones will compete in backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, fly, and 3-meter diving. Prelims start at 10:00 a.m. with diving at 11:30 a.m. Finals are slated to begin at 5:00 p.m.
