AMES, Iowa – Iowa State finalized the regular season with the ISU Alumni Open while honoring 12 Cyclone seniors. Finley Mclear also raced in the 800-meter at the Kehoe Twilight Friday night.
Zach Verzani jumped up to No. 2 in Iowa State history with a dominant hammer throw mark of 211-9 (64.55m). Garret Wagner joined in putting up an all-time top 10 performance with 189-1 (57.63m), now the 10th-best mark in school history.
Betty Rosvold began the meet with a win in the women's discus hitting a mark of 176-8 (53.84m), less than three feet off her ISU personal best that ranks at No. 2 in program history.
Kevin Sakson took the men's shot put title with 59-3 (18.06m), hitting the mark on his first throw. For the women, Jadan Brumbaugh took second with 45-0 1/4 (13.72m). Multi-event athletes Kailynn Gubbels (34-5 3/4, 10.51m) and Kiersten Fisher (34-0 3/4, 10.38m) also competed. Fisher hit an all-time best with her mark.
In the hammer throw, redshirt freshman Ella O'Neall put up a 19-foot personal best with 178-2 (54.32m) for third. Hannah Baier recorded a mark of 133-7 (40.73m) in her second time competing in the event.
Alec Carr went sub-52 seconds in 400m hurdles for the first time with 51.56 to take the win. The time is .19 seconds off the top 10 program list and puts him in good position to qualify for NCAA West Prelims. Joven Nelson took third in 52.58 while freshman Grayson Hartman clocked a PR of 54.92.
Kiersten Fisher posted the winning time in 100m hurdles with 13.91, a new personal best. For the men, Jack Latham won 110m hurdles in 14.40 while running against the wind at -2.4 m/s.
Sophomore Jack Noble won the high jump clearing 6-8 (2.03m), just off his personal record of 6-9. Other victories included freshman Brooklyn Sandvig's 100m win of 23.91 and Tyler Carreon's 800m win of 1:48.94, just off his PR. Aspen Fulbright posted a win in the women's 1,500m with 4:36.29 in her first time racing the event.
Closing out the night was the 1,500m, with men posting big time drops. Freshman Devan Kipyego took the win in 3:42.08, less than a second off the ISU top 10 list. Emanuel Galdino finished right after in 3:42.77 with a two second PR while Levi Taylor trimmed over three seconds off his previous best with 3:46.17. Ryan Watts raced for the first time collegiately in the event clocking 3:47.34.
Over at the Kehoe Twilight hosted by Maryland, Finley Mclear finished as the fastest collegian and third overall in the 800m with 1:47.96. Cyclone pro Festus Lagat won the event in 1:46.69.
The Big 12 Championships are next for the Cyclones Thursday, May 9 through Saturday, May 11.
