AMES, Iowa – Iowa State swimming and diving head coach Matt Leach has announced the additions of three transfers and a freshman to the 2024-25 roster. The four signees join eight previous additions to the group to round out the recruiting class in Leach's first season at the helm for ISU.
"It is an exciting time for our Cyclone Swimming and Diving program as we add 12 new members to our family! This group will be our foundation as we continue to build and grow on our storied history," said Leach. "Our nine incoming freshmen and three transfers will add to our values of family first, academics second and competing at the highest level third. Please help me welcome Maggie, Grace M., Megan, Lili, Anja, Carli, Grace S., Abby, Miray, Kayla, Keirlyn and Sophie to our Cyclone family!"
Miray Abay – Özel Antalya Koleji Anadolu Lisesi – Antalya, Turkey – Swimmer
Abay comes to Iowa State for her freshman season in 2024-25. She brings international competition experience to the roster and was a two-time national team qualifier (2021, 2022). In 2021, she was a Turkish national team qualifier (juniors and open), taking second place in the juniors 200 fly and third place in the 100 fly, 200 free and 200 fly open age. Competing at the Okul Yarislari Juniors Swimming Championships, the won the 200 fly and finished second in the 100 fly.
Miray is the daughter of Hüsamettin and Meryem. She enjoys reading books, listening to music and spending time with friends. Miray has also spent time giving back to her community, giving children swimming lessons and doing other various charity activities. She plans to study business administration while at Iowa State.
Kayla Bulseco – Clear Creek High School (Lindenwood) – Dallas, Texas – Sprint Free/Fly
Bulseco comes to Ames following one season at Lindenwood and a stellar prep career at Clear Creek High School. The Dallas, Texas native was an All-American and four-year state qualifier for Coach Halford at Clear Creek and set school records in the 200 free medley and 400 free medley relays. She earned four letters as a four-year varsity starter and was a team captain for two seasons.
Bulseco is the daughter of Lynette and Jon. Her brother, Jacob, swims at the Air Force Academy. She intends to study marketing while at Iowa State.
Keirlyn Mullica – Sage Creek High School (Richmond) – San Diego, California – Swimmer
Mullica joins the Cyclones following the completion of her freshman campaign at the University of Richmond. She aided the Spiders in a second-place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships. Mullica finished second in the 100 free in 56.62 at the Cavalier Invitational. Against Penn, she was second in the 200 IM (2:12.25) and the 100 fly (59.55).
In high school, Mullica set records in the 50 free, 100 free, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley. She was a 2022 State Finalist in the 100 backstroke, a two-time CIF Champion in the 100 backstroke while claiming titles in the 100 butterfly and 100 free.
Keirlyn is the daughter of Scott and Ashley Mullica and has one brother, Langdon. She has several family ties to Iowa State as her father, aunt (Amy Mullica) and grandmother (Peggy Lee) all attended. When she is not in the pool, Keirlyn enjoys surfing and swimming in the ocean. She plans to study biology and was an AP Scholar with Distinction in high school (2023).
Sophie Schmitz – Vel Phillips Memorial High School (Kenyon College) – Madison, Wis. – Swimmer
Schmitz will use her final year of eligibility at Iowa State following four seasons at Kenyon College, the two-time NCAA Division III Champions (2022, 2024). She was a three-time qualifier and finalist at the NCAA DIII Championships in the 400 IM, 200 butterfly and 1650 free (2022, 2023, 2024). Schmitz earned top-10 NCAA finishes in the 400 IM and 200 butterfly in both 2023 and 2024.
Schmitz also excelled in the classroom, carrying a 4.0 cumulative GPA in high school and graduating Cum Laude from Kenyon College. She also made the Kenyon Merit List in six of her eight semesters during undergrad.
Sophie is the daughter of Chantel and Dean and has one sister, Lily. She graduated with her bachelor's degree in physics and plans to pursue a master's degree in water resources engineering. In her free time, Sophie enjoys music and plays the harp and piano. She also enjoys fiber arts, especially crochet.
Iowa State announced the signing of Maggie Bendell, Grace Marek, Lili Neisser, Anja Peck, Carli Poppen and Abby Tollefson in November. The full release can be found here.
