PISCATAWAY, N.J. -Â Yonger Bastida and Anthony Echemendia competed in the NWCA All-Star Classic to open the 2025-26 college wrestling season Saturday night inside of Jersey Mike's Arena. Bastida prevailed over Michigan's No. 4 Taye Ghadiali in a heavyweight tilt, 8-2.
Echemendia fell in the main event, 7-3, to two-time defending national champion Jesse Mendez (Ohio State).
In his first match in nearly a year, No. 3 Bastida took out No. 4 Taye Ghadiali via 8-2 decision in a heavyweight tilt.
After a scoreless first period, Bastida tallied an escape and a stalling point in the second period to take a 2-0 advantage. The Cuban notched a pair of takedowns in the final period to pull away from Ghadiali. Despite taking a majority of the shots early in the match, Bastida's first takedown came on a smooth counter off of a Ghadiali single leg attempt.
Echemendia was unable to get to his offense in his 141-pound bout against Mendez. The Buckeye controlled the center of the mat and hand fighting throughout most of the match. Mendez tallied two takedowns in a 7-3 decision.
