FORT MYERS, Fla. - No. 10 Iowa State (8-0, 0-0 Big 12) led wire-to-wire against Marquette (4-2, 0-0 Big East), winning by a score of 84-73 Friday morning in the first round of the Coconut Hoops Blue Heron Division.
Iowa State got contributions from a variety of players today. Audi Crooks scored 14 of her 18 points in the first half, along with Jada Williams scoring 13 of her 15 in the first half. Addy Brown then took over in the second half with Crooks going to the bench, scoring 14 points in the half. The Cyclones were relentless on the offensive glass, grabbing 17 boards for 18 second-chance points.
How it Happened
Kenzie Hare got things going for ISU with a 3-pointer out of the gate. After a couple of buckets from Marquette, the Cyclones went on a 10-0 run to lead 15-4 and force a Marquette timeout at the 5:22 mark. After a three from Sydney Harris, Marquette would use a 9-2 run to cut Iowa State's lead to five with two minutes left. Both teams traded buckets until the end of the first quarter, where the Cyclones led 23-18.
Back-and-forth buckets continued to start the second frame. Jada Williams then took over midway through the quarter, scoring eight straight points for the Cyclones on a couple of fancy finishes at the rim, pushing ISU's lead to nine. A three from Ariana Jackson off an offensive rebound gave Iowa State its biggest lead at 14 with 46 seconds left, and the Cyclones headed to the locker room up 47-35. Williams grabbed eight boards in the half, and she and Crooks combined for 27 first-half points.
With Crooks going to the bench early in the third because of foul trouble, Addy Brown and Sydney Harris stepped up for Iowa State. Brown got into the post and scored six straight to increase the lead to 17. After a layup from Reese Beaty, Sydney Harris scored six straight, including a three-pointer on Iowa State's third opportunity of the possession with 2:22 left. Brown would knock in a three with 31 seconds left to give ISU their biggest lead at 18. Iowa State ended the third frame up 70-52, where Brown and Harris combined for 19 of the 23 third-quarter points.
Iowa State went on to win 84-73 in a wire-to-wire victory.
Top Performers
Addy Brown finished with 18 points, six assists, and three blocks. Audi Crooks also scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds, with five being offensive boards. Jada Williams recorded her second double-double of the season, ending with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
